1. Jesus shows the rich young ruler that he does not know himself. Jesus reveals that he is comparing himself with others but not comparing himself with God. The ten commandments only reveal that we all fall short of God’s righteousness.

2. The young rich man did not understand who Jesus the Eternal King of Kings was, so he was not willing to sell all he had and followed Jesus.

No one has loved God with all your heart in this life. No one has ever loved their neighbors as themselves. These two sins multipled throughout a life would amount to many thousands sins. So no one can get into heaven without Jesus.

Mat. 6 lay not up treasures on earth but lay up treasures in heaven

For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our lowly condition into conformity with His glorious body, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.”
